ANYTHING WORTH WATCHING TONITE?

FALLEN FAMILY MEMBERS OF GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY

COWPATTY NOTES

It was a perfect night for racing last night as finally the weather cooperated. The legends were on the slate and ran flawless heat races. The feature was won by Scott Houdeshell followed by Lucas Montgomery and Todd McCollum rounded out the top 3. The late models were really hungry last night with the $1000 memorial race on the line! Nate Christman was nothing less than spectacular! The rookie ran the top groove to perfection for many laps only to slip up and Chuck Schutz moved into the lead position. At that point in the race it seemed that Schutz had it under control till Randy Stoudt started reeling in Schutz late in the race. With only 3 laps left, Stoudt got by Schutz and cruised to victory. Finishing 2nd was Schutz followed by Ron Kline, Mike Kellner and Kyle Merkel rounded out the top 5. Randy Stoudt also won the very popular Gauntlet race beating Mike Kellner in the final duel. Randy mentioned in victory lane that he did run Mikey up the track that forced him out of the throttle. He also praised Kellner, stating Mike is one hellava driver.

The modifieds were handed some penalties thru-out the evening for rough riding. Some I didnt agree with! JMO! Jason Hamilton was put back 2 positions in his heat race with an altercation with Craig Von Dohren. Kevin Hirthler was sent to the rear with a nasty mix-up with Jon Kellner Sr sending Jon hard into the outside wall. Jon was quick to exit the car and chase after Hirthler before he was restrained. Keith Brightbill had an altercation with Billy Pauch Jr which tore up Pauch's car and knocked him from competition for the night. It looked as though the BIG 3 (Howard, Strunk, CVD) were going to be dueling it out for the win. AJ Desantis drove an excellent race and led many early laps. Howard worked by Desantis by lap 15 and took control. It seemed as though Duane would be the 1st repeat winner of the season. Jeff Strunk was tearing up the track and reeled in Howard and thus took command on a restart. Soon after Howards mount broke ending his evening. Von Dohren ran 2nd, but never really challenged Strunk who cruised to his 1st victory aboard the Vince Gagliardo owned #41. CVD finished 2nd followed by Meme Desantis, AJ Desantis and Kerry Kratz rounded out the top 5. Jeff thanked motor builder, Squeek who he mentioned that he had been pretty tough on recently. Jeff is a class act in victory lane. Jeff also takes over the point lead from Howard. The Gagliardo's were not present in victory lane?????

A very good night of racing that went on a little too late which kept us from going pitside. Good chats with Jason Hamilton & Glenn Gold along with Jeff Imbody pre-race. Always good to meet up with Joe Adams of Joe Adams lettering. Joe always seems to have a good story for us and enjoys visiting the "CPN" site! Joe recently re-did the graphics on Billy Pauch Jr's car. It looks EXCELLENT! Also want to thank the Merkel brothers for placing "CPN" stickers on their hot-rods! Thanks Kyle & Sean! Another thanks goes out to Mike Laise who runs the #318 modified on a shoe-sting budget for placing "CPN" stickers on his mount! Mike needs some added support for his family owned team. I think Mike could really "get it done" with some support! Sorry to say that Captain Ron was without his sword and cooler full of growlers due to a bout with lyme disease! Hope your back in charge soon Captain! We picked up our tickets for Thunder on the Hill tuesday night which is always a good one! Thanks also to Ernie Saxton who gave a shout out to Billy who was sporting his "CPN" shirt. Ernie is in line to pick up his very own "CPN" shirt next saturday! Hopefully we will avoid the thunderstorms on tuesday night! We'll see you then! Keep on Cowpattying!

I would like to personally thank everyone who has visited Cowpatty Nation over the past 8 months! I never thought the site would become as popular as it has? It started as just a fun thing between a few friends that I put together to get us through the winter months without much racing action taking place. Since then, the site is getting between 50-100 visits per day! We have also remarkably had over 160 t-shirts/sweatshirts made! I really enjoy working on the site and always like to hear any feedback you might have. We have had an opportunity to meet so many people that we would have never met thanks to the website! Sounds like "K-DOG" Keith Hoffman may be a permanent addition to the weekly Grandview wars? Lose a Hoffman, gain a Hoffman. Man, neither Hoffman ran on a weekly basis at "The Hill", now we have had both making the attempt! Keith is piloting the vacated 15J that John Pursell had driven earlier in the season. I am not sure if John will return, or it is now Keith's ride? We shall see?

DAMION "THE DEMON" GARDNER

Here is a shot of Eric & I with my favorite USAC driver, "The Demon" Damion Gardner. This pic is from Grandview when USAC was in town on June 2nd. Damion won the running of the 2007 Chili-Bowl Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I have always enjoyed his aggresive driving style. Damion currently sits in 6th place in points while piloting the DG Racing #71.

RAIN MOVES LATE MODEL MEMORIAL RACE TO JUNE 27

BECHTELSVILLE, PA JUNE 20, 2009 . . . All day rain on Saturday forced the postponement of the annual Late Model Memorial, a race run in memory of racers, officials and others involved in racing at Grandview Speedway who have passed away. The race, a 30-lap event for NASCAR Late Models, has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 27th. Racing will start at 7:30 p.m. The Memorial, paying $1,000 to win, will now be part of a tripleheader card of racing that features the NASCAR Whelen All American Series 358 modifieds along with the Legends stock cars. In addition to the Memorial race for the late models there will also be one-on-one gauntlet competition with the “survivor” taking home the largest chunk of money. Adult admission for the June 17th show will be $15. Then on Tuesday, June 30th, the Keystone State Speedweek Series will feature the 410 sprint cars and 358 modifieds with racing starting at 7:30 p.m. The late models will be in the limelight again on Saturday, July 4th when the Beer City of Quakertown Firecracker 40 is presented with late models running for an increased purse. The annual Holiday show will also feature the NASCAR 358 modifieds. In addition the Kory Fleming late model team will be giving away four bicycles to lucky youngsters as part of a special promotional drawing. Racing will start at 7:30 p.m. Adult admission for that special Holiday show will be $18. Fans are reminded that time is running out to enter the BPG Racing “Name The Race After a Fan” contest. Fans are asked to send a letter, 100 words or less, on why the night should be named after them. Entries can be sent to Esaxton144@aol.com or to ESC, Inc. 1448 Hollywood Avenue, Langhorne, PA 19047. The winner of the contest will have their name used in all advertising and promotional efforts, have the opportunity to go to victory lane for both feature events and entertain their friends in the sponsorship suite for their night. HERE IS LAST YEARS BPG/CHAD SINON TRACK'S FAVORITE FAN CONTEST LETTER! Just in case some of you have never read it?

My Husband, Brett Thayer – Grandview’s Biggest Fan!

I’d like to try to describe to you in my own words what living with Grandview’s Biggest Fan is like. In our life, it’s not just about the races on Saturday night. My husband’s passion for Grandview is so much more than that. It all started for him in 1974, about 34 years ago, when his dad brought him to his first race at Grandview and it soon turned into a weekly ritual for them. That ritual lasted for almost ten years at which point real life took over for a while. He continued to attend races at the track, but not as often as he would have liked. At first, early in our relationship, Brett never mentioned Grandview at all. It all began for me on a Saturday evening in May 1999. We were moving into our house in Bechtelsville. It was late in the day and at the very first roar of the engines, Brett ran around opening every window to listen for the sound of Ernie’s voice crackling through the air from Grandview. I didn’t know who Ernie was or what Grandview was…I had no clue what I had gotten myself into! From that point on the word “Grandview” has popped up in conversations in our house on an almost daily basis, not just during racing season.

During the wintertime, Brett scours the internet and racing papers for any news related to the drivers, crews and owners. He worries over rumors that the track has been sold. He wonders if THIS season will be the LAST season. Thankfully, that rumor never does come true. He wonders out loud if he should purchase a season ticket this year or not (probably waiting for my approval.) If we’re driving in the general vicinity of the track, we’ll inevitably end up driving right past the track just to have a look. One year for Christmas I wrapped up some cash and made a phony ticket to pay his way in on Opening Day…it was one of his favorite Christmas presents ever! In late winter, he attends the racing shows in the area just to get a first glimpse at some of the new paintjobs and have an opportunity to talk racing again. His enthusiasm, even in the dead of winter, is contagious.

Brett looks so forward to a new season at the track that he will actually lose sleep over it a few days before Practice Day. He hasn’t missed a Practice Day in years not to mention Opening Day. The planning usually starts mid-week with the first peek at the next Saturday’s weather forecast. If there’s rain in the forecast, I will hear about it several times a day. If good weather is forecasted, I’ll hear about that, too! Brett plans out well in advance what races are the BIG ones and which ones he just can’t miss. I’ve rescheduled parties and plans numerous times based on Grandview’s schedule for the season.

Race day itself is another story! Brett begins to talk a little faster, move a little quicker and can’t quite sit still until it’s time to go to the track. The entire day revolves around the races…taking a nap, picking the right clothes for the weather, packing the cooler, washing the goggles, making phone calls and plans. It takes less than five minutes to get there from our house, but Brett routinely leaves at least fifteen minutes travel time for the ride, just in case. Of course, there are the Thunder on the Hill races, too, which also require the same diligence and planning.

One of the nicest surprises of Brett’s life was meeting Eric and Ron Shankweiler of Boyertown, who are also diehard Grandview fans. Brett met Eric through our daughter’s daycare. We were at a picnic at the daycare for our kids when Brett struck up a conversation with Eric about sports. It didn’t take long for them to realize they had something in common…Grandview. The conversation lasted ALL NIGHT with the two of them standing, drinking beer, and sharing their stories about Grandview. The picnic went on without them and they didn’t even notice. Ron is Eric’s dad. They kindly invited Brett to join them in their favorite seats at the top of the stands. He has joined them there for five years now and their friendship means the world to him. Finding two friends to share the track experience with has added enormous fun and camaraderie to his life…not to mention weekly phone calls and emails and the creation of a Grandview website that Brett maintains weekly along with the fantasy Grandview league that he runs for the guys. Thanks to Eric and Ron (and their early birthday present to Brett), I now have a side of sheet metal from Craig Von Dohren’s modified hanging in my family room!

As mentioned above, his love of the place led to the creation of a fantasy Grandview league and a website. It is one of his favorite hobbies and is an easy way for him to communicate the results of the fantasy league to the guys.

Over the years, I’ve done my part to support Brett because being Grandview’s Biggest Fan isn’t always easy. I have sat in the stands in the blistering sun, the pouring rain and even a passing snowstorm with him while he takes it all in with a beer and a smile. On nights that Brett couldn’t make it to a race, I have woken up early the next day to call the track for the prior night’s results, so I could quiz Brett on the winners over breakfast. I have agonized with Brett over the tragedies at the track. I have listened to stories of drivers, crew or their family members that have been taken from this world too young. I don’t know the people, but I will never forget their stories. I’ve stood back and watched him strike up conversations with folks from the track at the mall, the hardware store, school functions, and local restaurants. Even their initial puzzled looks at him won’t make him stop talking to them about Grandview. We’ve donated money to help for one cause or the other when the drivers have collected in the stands. And, I’ve spent countless Saturday nights without my favorite date because there’s nothing in the world he’d rather do than go to Grandview on a Saturday night.

Being the wife of Grandview’s Biggest Fan means that I get to be a part of a lot of fun stuff, too. I have watched Brett’s eyes light up the first time our daughter ever saw the cars line up on the track and I have seen the huge smile on his face when Kelsey started asking to go to the races with him last year. I have listened to my daughter delightedly retelling the story about how she and her daddy met Jason Hamilton and how Jason gave her a bunch of racing goodies through the fence. She’s his fan for life! I’ve walked through the pits with them after a race while Kelsey collected autographs and don’t know who had more fun…Kelsey, Brett or me! Another time I got to hear Kelsey tell me that she and daddy met ERNIE that night and it was all so very exciting, especially when told by a little girl with wide eyes! We have some unforgettable memories together like the night the modifieds ran without one single caution and another time when it snowed during the feature. I’ve sent Brett’s name in to be mentioned by Ernie on his birthday many times…usually a night at Grandview with us is all he wants for his birthday every year. We’ve got lots of birthday memories from Grandview over the years.

Grandview Speedway is a HUGE part of Brett’s life. He loves everything about it…the track itself, the dirt, the history, Craig and Jason, the stands, the food, the fans, Ernie, the Rogers family, the drivers, the crew chiefs, the smell of the fuel, the roar of the engines, the cars, the stories, the memories, the wrecks, the pits, the tailgating, the fireworks, and most recently the fun of Kelsey sitting in his lap in the stands talking “racing” with him. In his life, it just doesn’t get any better than that. Grandview is the good stuff for him. It’s what makes life worth living. It is so much more to him than just a Saturday night at the races.

Brett will be turning 50 on July 14, 2008. Grandview Speedway has been a very important and fun part of his life for most of those fifty years. He has shared his love of the track with his father and is now passing that enthusiasm and love of the track on to Kelsey. I truly cannot think of a more fitting way for him to celebrate his fifty years on this earth than with a night at Grandview like the one you’ve described in the ad for this contest. Please give him your consideration. He is most deserving and would be most appreciative. I doubt that you will find a bigger fan or a better spokesperson for the track than my husband. It would sincerely and honestly give Grandview’s Biggest Fan one of the greatest nights of his life!

And, if I still haven’t convinced you, I thought I would share a poem I wrote for him last year in a home-made birthday card covered with Grandview stickers and pictures of CVD. I know it’s corny, but it goes something like this…



“Ode To A Race Fan”

You’ll find him at Grandview on Saturday night,
He’s close to the top, standing in clear sight.
He sits at the track with his red cooler and backpack,
With a smile on his face because he really loves this place!
He loves the sounds, the sights and the smell,
When CVD is in the lead, you may even hear him yell!
Just a French fry or two, and a slice of pizza will do,
There’s nothing like track food to put him in a great mood!
If you hang around for a while, you’re bound to see him smile.
Through rain and sleet and snow, he’ll cheer them on and watch them go!
Yep, that’s my man…the World’s Greatest Dirt Track Fan!

Fans are invited to send an e-mail/letter to Esaxton144@aol.com, 100 words or less, explaining why they feel a race night should be named after them. The winner of the contest will be able to bring seven friends to the races on July 18th and watch from the sponsor suite. In addition they will all go to victory lane for both features. All advertising and promotion will refer to the race night as their night. All entries must be submitted by July 4th and entries will be accepted at the track.

WEEKLY COWPATTY NOTES

Man, what a crazy day and night it was! The weather being so unpredictable. It was my daughter and I running a solo Cowpatty effort to "THE HILL" last nite! Fire Marshall Doug was on fire duty, manning the front stretch once again. The skies were very ominous looking when we arrived only to somewhat clear out and turn cooler than expected. We headed up pitside to the gate and met Brian who is a Jon Kellner Sr pit crewman. Nice meeting you Brian and thanks for picking up a "CPN" shirt! Good Luck to Jon the rest of the season and to you learning the ropes. Next was Ben Moyer who plays a big role with the "PPB" team of Billy Pauch Jr. Ben picked up shirts for himself, Billy Pauch Jr and Eric Kauffman of Kauffman's barbecue. Thanks Ben! Can't wait to see the "new" body on the #8. Todd Bashore also picked up his "CPN" shirt last night. Todd runs the parts truck in the pits! The Bashore family business. Gave a shout out to Jason Hamilton on the way back to the stands.

We had the pleasure of meeting Storm R-1 Trooper and his wife in the stands. Great to meet you guys! Storm R-1 picked up his "CPN" shirt also. Obviously they are big supporters of Johnny Rea and Ryan Godown. Earlier in the day we had the pleasure of hanging out with Pete Knappenberger at Doug Ritters graduation party. A good time that was! Pete scored a couple "CPN" shirts for himself and Whippy from his show Racers Roundtable. Thanks Pete! Sorry we didnt catch up with the infamous Diamond Dog! Sorry I missed you DD! I don't like missing the opportunity for some good "race chatter" with the Dog! Also a brief chat with Chris Noble with his excellent Greatest Show on Dirt website and Jeff Pfister. Yo, Sidney got it DONE! Congrats!

With URC in the house there is always plenty of action. They accounted for 3 flips thru-out the evening with some very close racing. Still cool to see "ageless" Kramer Williamson behind the wheel. Amazing! The modifieds were a little less aggressive. I spoke to Mike Kelly pre-race and he laid down the law at the drivers meeting and there were no questions asked by any of the drivers!! He figured we will just see how it plays out! The racing was clean for the most part. Poor Tom Umbenhauer had the 357 rockin'. Its a shame the motor seemed have terminal issues over the last few laps of the heat race. Billy Pauch Jr had a different body on the car and they will be putting a brand new body on for the upcoming weeks. CVD was back with the TEO car once again. Kerry Kratz also returned after a week off. Jeremy Banos and Addison Meitzler were equally impressive winning their respective heat races. Shawn Reimert was also hauling the mail to win his heat race. It was rookie heat win night also for A.J. Desantis who had the #14 honkin' to win his heat. Jon Kellner Sr and Mike Gular won the consi's.

7 laps into the URC feature after a red flag, the rains and lightning began. We made the quick trip to the car before the skies opened up and cancelled the show. Man, my daughter was pissed! She said, "Dad, you have got to be kidding. We saw everything but the features and now we have to go home?" "What about the pits...I love the pits!" You know, I never thought I would hear her say that but, DAMN...that is a GREAT feeling! I guess the acorn doesnt fall that far from the tree!! Till next week...keep on Cowpattying!

SUSQUEHANNA 358 MODIFIED RACE TONITE!

Sunday night, June 14, a night of open wheel racing returns to SSP in a big way with the All Star 358 Summer Championship featuring the best 358 Sprint Car drivers from Williams Grove, Lincoln, Selinsgrove and Trailways Speedways on neutral ground for the only time in 2009. The 358 Small Block Modifieds will also make their return to SSP after many years away from the track. The Legends Cars will also be on the card as racing begins at 6:00 p.m.

The 20-lap 358 Sprint Car feature event will be pay $1,200 to the winner. The tire rule will be the same used at the regular 358 Sprint Car tracks – (All right rear tires used must be a HOOSIER National Sprint Spec tire, size 105/18-15. Any SC compound tire is permitted). All other rules of the Central PA 358 Sprint Cars will prevail for this event. Mufflers are not required for the 358 Sprint Cars. Raceievers will be mandatory. Lineups will be determined by a blind draw for the heat races with an inversion for the feature to be determined by a draw from the 1st heat race winner.

The 25-lap 358 Small Block Modified feature will pay $2,200 to the winner. The rules will follow the generally accepted 358 Small Block Modified rules throughout local tracks in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey with the exception of 1) 2350 lb. min. weight with driver after the race; 2) max. 365 cubic inches; 3) racing gas or alcohol may be used; 4) open tire rule. Mufflers are not required for th 358 Small Block Modifieds, but Raceivers are highly recommended.

Lineups will be determined by a blind draw for the heat races with an inversion for the feature to be determined by a draw from the 1st heat race winner.On Sunday, the pit gates will open 3:00 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 4:00 p.m. Practice begins at 5:20 p.m. with qualifying races at 6:00 p.m. followed by consolation races and feature events. General Admission

Grandstand ticket prices Sunday, June 14, will be Adults (ages 18-59) $15.00; Young Adults (ages 11-17) & Senior Adults (60 & Older) $13.00; Children (10 & under) are free. Pit pass prices on both days are $25.00 with a reduced price of $22.00 for all pit competitor license holders. The minimum age requirement to purchase a pit pass is 12 years of age with a copy of a birth certificate is required for all ages 12 to 17.

GRANDVIEW RESULTS...LIGHTNING & RAIN WIN OUT!

Last night's winners were lightning and rain! After completing all the heat races and consolation events, the rain started falling during the URC sprint car feature. There were 7 laps in the books when the rain forced the cars pitside and the race was cancelled. The two features will be made up on July 25th with a regularly scheduled show of URC and modifieds.

Heat winners for the modifieds were Jeremy Banos, Addison Meitzler, Shawn Reimert and AJ Desantis. The consi's were won by Mike Gular and Jon Kellner Sr. The URC heats were won by Scott Pursell, Jonathan Swanson and Chuck Palmucci. The consi was won by Joe Zuczek.

URC THIS SATURDAY AT GRANDVIEW!

One of the most popular events presented at Grandview Speedway is the doubleheader show that features the United Racing Company sprint cars and NASCAR 358 Modifieds. That doubleheader show happens this Saturday, June 13th, with the green flag being waved at 7:30 p.m. Heading up the always exciting sprint cars will be point leader Chris Coyle of Wilmington, DE. The veteran racer will be looking for his first win of the season at Grandview but he has been a consistent performer in the four events presented so far and that is the reason he sits on top of the championship chase with the traveling sprint organization. Multi-time champion Curt Michael will be in the field, about 30 entries expected, along with Trevor Lewis, he won last Saturday at Selinsgrove Speedway. Other top talents scheduled to compete include Kramer Williamson, Michael Carber, JJ Grasso, Davey Sammons and a host of others.

The Saturday night doubleheader could very well be one of the most competitive events of the season as the sprints and modifieds produced some great wheel-to-wheel contact sport competition. A 25-lap feature will top the action for the URC sprints while a 30-lapper will complete the show for the modifieds

Here we have one of our Cowpatty fans SpiderDan! SpiderDan put this race car together (if you can actually call it that) for his daughter's school project! He threw a "CPN" sticker on that race car (box) and a #15 (dripping paint) for Jason Hamilton (honestly Jason, we had nothing to do with this). I gave Dan his name because I think he resembles Tobey McGuire a little bit? But after this poor excuse for a school project he did for his daughter...well Dan...I think you have more of a train wreck going there! I was able to lamely put you in your spidey suit which kinda matches the lame race car! I really like how your legs and body go different directions! Here is a good picture of one of the winners in the late model division saturday night Mike Kellner! Mike can sure get around Grandview's high banks in a hurry! Billy Pauch Jr wins his 1st modified feature last night at Grandview Speedway! Congrats to Billy! Billy has reeled off some fine runs over the last few weeks and you knew the win was coming soon! Billy has been very smooth, and the car has a ton of smoke aboard! When Billy finally worked his way past Mike Gular for the lead, you knew it was over. Billy is one of the friendliest and good spirited drivers at Grandview week in and week out! Nice job Billy!

DON MARKS MEMORIAL NIGHT!

Tomorrow night is Don Marks Memorial night at Grandview Speedway! The night is being run in memory of Don Marks who was the long time track photographer who passed away in March, 2008. His contributions to Grandview Speedway, to the sport and to the racers were numerous. He was considered one of the very best photographers in the motorsports business.

There is a full night of racing on tap with an additional 20 lap make up late model feature as a result of the May 16th rainout. Adding a lot of interest to the racers on this night will be cash awards for the winners of each qualifying event plus lap money for the lap leaders in the modified feature and one 20-lap late model feature. In addition there are a couple of special cash awards plus beautiful statues for the feature winners courtesy of the Cheers Tavern.
